Why are Dentures Kept in Water ?

Throughout our companies history of making and providing dentures to patients in Joondalup W.A Lee has seen in excess of over 8000 patients personally making and fitting their Dentures! Its safe to say during that time we have been asked 100's of times

"Why are Dentures Kept in Water"?  then of course the next question is should I do the same? 

The short answer is Yes, if you can absolutely YES! Keep your dentures in water overnight.

Keeping dentures in water over night may help with moisture retention. It is possible for dentures to dry out if left exposed to air for an extended period.

Dry dentures may warp or lose their shape, resulting in a less than ideal fit. Therefore soaking them helps preserves their integrity.

another Great reason to keep dentures in water overnight is to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms.

When Dentures are constantly kept in the mouth these organisms can accumulate on dentures, leading to oral health issues and unpleasant odours. Obviously it is

important to have a good cleaning routine and we will discuss that more in future blog posts.

Denture Cleaning is as simple as soaking dentures in water, if possible Ozonated water is hands down the Best !

Soaking dentures overnight can help loosen and remove plaque, stains, and debris that may have accumulated during the day.

This will help to keep your dentures in pristine condition and keep your teeth clean and sparkling white! soaking Dentures will also improve your oral health for the long term.

Tips for overnight soaking for your dentures are as follows,

Use lukewarm or room temperature water to soak your dentures. It is always best to avoid using hot water, as if the water is too hot it may distort or damage to the denture and may even alter the fit slightly. because a well fitting denture can come down to adjustments of just millimetres we want to preserve the fit as much as possible.

If you are using Denture Cleaning tablets only do that about once every 3 or 4 weeks and do not soak them for too long! 

Give your Dentures a gentle clean with liquid dish washing soap and a soft denture brush then rinse them off and place your dentures in a clean denture container or a glass of water

Even though your dentures have been soaking water be sure to give them a quick rinse before replacing them in your mouth.

Remember, it's crucial to follow the specific care instructions provided by your dentist or prosthodontist for your particular denture type.
